Suzanne Smales

Over the course of three decades in the law, Suzanne has built a reputation in the UK and Australia as an experienced, capable and well‐liked family lawyer.  Having been called to the Bar in 1990, she practised as a barrister in England and Wales for the next two decades, amassing particular expertise in children’s law matters.

After relocating to Australia, she qualified as an Australian lawyer, and practised at the Queensland Bar, while teaching Family Law at the University of Queensland.   Suzanne also took the opportunity of practice in Australia to train as a mediator and a collaborative practitioner, in order to extend her knowledge beyond litigation, to more solution focused, facilitative practice models.

Suzanne continued teaching on moving to Hong Kong, where she taught at the Hong Kong campus of the University of Law. She continues to teach for the University of Law in Leeds.

Her belief in the merits of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) was instrumental in her decision to join Hall Brown ‐ one of the country’s foremost boutique family law firms ‐ as a consultant partner.  Suzanne is keen to support clients from the outset of their matter.  The litigation experience gained from many years’ practice at the bar, together with the learning and practice in ADR skills, provides a broad skill base enabling Suzanne to provide clients with a bespoke and expert service.  The ability to pursue resolution to complex family disputes, using both the courtroom and
more conciliatory methods, has made her popular with colleagues, peers and clients alike.
